For years, the couple has faithfully played the Maryland Lottery’s Multi-Match game, but when they saw that someone had hit the jackpot on Feb. 24, they were momentarily crushed—thinking the winner wasn’t them.
That is, until they noticed the store where the ticket was sold.
"I saw on the Lottery website that someone had won the Multi-Match jackpot and was disappointed," said the anonymous winner, going by the name “Amazing Racer.”
His disappointment instantly flipped to excitement when he saw the ticket was sold at J Convenience in Parkville, a store he and his wife had visited the day before to buy their own tickets.
Even then, the former Baltimore City employee refused to check his numbers.
"As crazy as it sounds, I didn’t want to jinx it. I just wanted to hold on to that feeling that I’d won as long as possible," he said.
Three suspense-filled days later, the couple finally scanned their ticket and saw a message directing them to visit the Maryland Lottery. That’s when reality hit.
"We figured that we’d won something, so we made an appointment to visit the Lottery," they said.
That’s when Lottery officials confirmed it—they were officially $3.3 million richer.
"We haven’t slept in three days," the couple joked.
With their newfound fortune, the retirees plan to pay off family debt, donate to charities and their church, and then figure out how to actually enjoy the money.
"With our retirement secure, we’ll have to do some thinking about how to enjoy this. I know we will," Amazing Racer said.
For selling the jackpot-winning ticket, J Convenience in Parkville will receive a $3,300 bonus.
This marks the first Multi-Match jackpot winner of 2025, following eight jackpots in 2024 and ten in 2023.
